About the Sony XM-5ES

Sony’s Elevated Standard hi-res amp

Sony’s Mobile ES Series XM-5ES Elevated Standard 5-channel amplifier will boost the level of your music while retaining its pristine, crisp, and full-range sound and impact. Capable of handling high-resolution sources and programs, this amp will help make it sound like you’re right there with the musicians in the studio or on stage. With 100 watts RMS output for each front and rear channel plus up to 750 watts RMS for a subwoofer, there’ll be plenty of volume available for playing your music the way you want.

Signal handling

You can bridge a couple of the amp’s channels together to power a subwoofer or high-performance speaker with up to 330 watts RMS — so you could use the amp to power three subwoofers, or a couple of high-performance speakers plus a sub. A more common application would be to use the amp to power two tweeters, two midrange drivers, and a sub. The front and rear channels both feature wide-range adjustable high-, low-, and band-pass filters, so you can fine-tune the sound to fit almost any combination of high-frequency tweeters, midrange drivers, and full-range speakers. The subwoofer channel has its own, separate tuning controls. The inputs can be summed and assigned, so factory pre-processed channels can be mixed together to produce full-range signals for the amp to boost. Preamp outputs let you easily add another stereo or mono amp to your system.

CTA-2006 Compliant: CTA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier’s RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4-ohms. CTA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CTA-2006 Specifications:

  • Channels 1-4
    • Power Output:
      • 100 watts RMS x 4 into 4-ohms

Amp Overview: The Sony XM-5ES is a Class D 5-channel amplifier. Its Class D design and aluminum chassis offer efficient dissipation of heat for reliable performance. The 4-Channel section of the amp can be used to drive four full-range speakers, bi-amp a pair of component speakers, or bridged for two subwoofers. The Subwoofer Channel features two sets of output terminals for easily connecting one or two subwoofers. With multiple crossovers built-in, you can configure the amplifier for low-pass, high-pass, or band-pass applications.

Speaker-Level Inputs: The RCA inputs will accept either speaker-level or line-level signals from your car’s head unit. A speaker-level signal is connected to the RCA inputs using a speaker wire to RCA adapter (sold separately).

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker-level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal from most head units.

Protection Circuits: The amplifier is equipped with protection circuits and turns off in the case of speaker short circuit, thermal overload, or DC output.

Controls

Turn-on: 2-position switch:

  • Remote: amp turns on when a +12 volt signal is applied to the remote terminal
  • Signal: amp turns on when it senses a speaker-level input

Input Voltage: 2-position switch:

  • Low: input sensitivity range is 200mV to 8V; used for preamp-level inputs
  • High: input sensitivity range is 3V to 16V; used for speaker-level inputs

Input Mode (4-Channels): 4-position switch:

  • 1-4: all four RCA inputs are used and feed the corresponding output channels (allows front-to-rear fading from the head unit)
  • 1: input 1 feeds all four output channels; typically only used when powering subwoofers
  • 1-2: input 1 feeds output channels 1 and 3, input 2 feeds output channels 2 and 4
  • 1+3/2+4: inputs 1 and 3 are combined and the summed signal feeds output channels 1 and 3; inputs 2 and 4 are combined and the summed signal feeds output channels 2 and 4

Input Mode (Subwoofer): 4-position switch:

  • 5: input 5 feeds the subwoofer channel; used when the headunit has a single mono subwoofer output
  • 5+6: input channels 5 & 6 are used to feed the subwoofer channel; used when the headunit has L/R subwoofer RCA outputs
  • 1+2: input channels 1&2 signals will be fed to the subwoofer channel; used when connecting the amplifier with one pair of input channels
  • 3+4: input chanels 3&4 signals will be fed to the subwoofer channel; used when connecting the amplifier with two pairs of input channels

Line Out Mode: 3-position switch:

  • Thru: inputs 1 and 2 feed line outputs 1 and 2 respectively
  • Stereo: inputs 1 and 3 are combined to feed line output 1; inputs 2 and 4 are combined to feed line output 2
  • All: all four inputs are combined and the summed signal feeds both line outputs

4-Channel Controls: Channels 1&2 and channels 3&4 have independent controls for the crossovers and input sensitivity.

  • Input Sensitivity (Gain): Input sensitivity is adjusted with rotary dials; the range depends on the input voltage switch setting.
  • Crossovers: The amp features 12dB per octave crossovers that can be configured as low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, or flat (full-range). There are identical crossover controls for channels 1/2 and 3/4:
  • Filter: set the crossover type to Off (full-range signal/no crossover used), High-Pass, Low-Pass, or Band-Pass
  • Range: select the frequency range for adjustment; 50-500 Hz or 500-5,000 Hz
  • High-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; range depends on the range switch setting; 50-500 Hz or 500-5,000 Hz
  • Low-Pass Frequency: rotary dial; range depends on the range switch setting; 50-500 Hz or 500-5,000 Hz

Subwoofer Channel Controls:

  • Input Sensitivity (Gain): input sensitivity is adjusted with a rotary dial; the range depends on the input voltage switch setting
  • Crossover: the amp features a 24dB per octave low-pass crossover. The crossover point is continuously variable from 50 to 500 Hz and can be turned on/off via a 2-way switch
  • Subsonic Filter: there is also a 24dB per octave subsonic filter to remove frequencies your sub can’t reproduce. The cutoff frequency is continuously variable from 5 to 50 Hz, and the subsonic filter can be turned on/off via a 2-way switch
  • Wired Remote Control: the included wired remote control lets you adjust the subwoofer output level independently from the overall volume. The small control module can be mounted on the console or dash with the supplied bracket and screws. The remote measures approximately 1-1/8″ in diameter and 1-3/8″ tall.
Connections

Power/Ground Input: Set-screw terminals are provided for connecting the power and ground cables. The terminals accept up to 1/0-gauge wire (Sony recommends 1/0-gauge minimum). The set screws are tightened/loosened with the included 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Remote Turn-on: The remote turn-on set screw terminal will accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screw is tightened/loosened with the included 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Note: The remote turn-on is usually not needed when a speaker-level input is used. The Auto Turn-on circuit will automatically turn the amp on when a signal is detected (and turn the amp off when the input signal is no longer detected).

Speaker Outputs: The six pair of speaker outputs are also set screw terminals and accept up to 8-gauge wire. They are tightened/loosened with the included 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Signal Input: The amplifier has three pair of stereo RCA inputs. If no line-level signal is available, you will need speaker wire to RCA adapters (sold separately) to connect the amplifier to the source unit via speaker wires.

Line Outputs: There is one pair of RCA preamp outputs, useful for adding another amp without running another set of cables. The preamp outputs are not affected by the crossovers or input sensitivity setting on this amp.

Fuses: The amp has four 40-amp ATO fuses.
