At Flynn Audio, we specialize in professional installation of remote car starters and remote start systems, and want to set the record straight.

Whether you’re curious about remote starts for your vehicle or considering installing a remote starter, this guide addresses the common myths and shares the truth about remote start systems. In this article, we debunk the most common myths about remote start systems to help you make an informed decision.

Introduction to Remote Car Starters

Remote car starters have become a must-have feature for many vehicle owners, thanks to the added convenience, comfort, and security they provide. A remote car starter allows you to start your car’s engine from a distance, so you can step into a perfectly warmed or cooled vehicle no matter the weather outside. This is especially valuable during extreme temperatures, whether you’re facing a freezing winter morning or a scorching summer afternoon. Beyond just comfort, remote car starters offer peace of mind by letting you control your car securely, ensuring your vehicle is ready to go when you are. As technology has advanced, today’s remote car starters come packed with features that cater to a wide range of vehicles and driver preferences, making them a smart upgrade for anyone looking to enhance their driving experience.

Benefits of Remote Start

Remote start systems deliver a host of benefits that go far beyond simple convenience. With a remote car starter, you can start your vehicle from the comfort of your home or office, allowing the engine to warm up or the cabin to cool down before you even open the door. This is particularly helpful in cold weather, as it means no more shivering while waiting for your car to heat up. Additionally, remote start systems can help reduce engine wear by giving your engine time to reach optimal operating temperature before you hit the road. Many remote start systems also include built-in security features, such as alarms and immobilizers, which can help deter vehicle theft and keep your car safe. Whether you’re looking for comfort, safety, or added peace of mind, remote car starters offer a range of features designed to improve your daily drive.

Key Features of Remote Start Systems

Today’s remote start systems are designed with a variety of features to suit different vehicles and driver needs. One standout feature is extended range, which allows you to start your car from further away—perfect for those who can’t park close to their house or work. Many systems also offer two-way communication, so you receive confirmation that your car has started successfully. Smartphone app integration is another popular feature, letting you control your remote start directly from your phone for maximum convenience. For those with manual transmission or diesel engine vehicles, there are remote start systems specifically designed to ensure compatibility and safe operation. With so many customizable options, remote start systems can be tailored to fit your lifestyle and vehicle requirements.

Myth #1: Remote Start Systems Harm Your Engine

One common misconception is that using a remote start system increases engine wear. The truth? Properly installed systems allow your engine to warm up or cool down gradually, reducing stress on critical components. Modern engines and diesel engines are designed to handle short idling periods, and remotely started vehicles in cold weather can even improve oil circulation and performance.

Myth #2: Remote Start Voids Your Car Warranty

Many worry that aftermarket remote start systems could impact a new car warranty. Thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, aftermarket products like remote car starters won’t automatically void a vehicle warranty, as long as the system is installed properly and doesn’t cause the problem. Under federal law, specifically the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, this prevents OEMs from voiding your vehicle’s warranty simply because a remote starter is installed. Concerns about a ‘remote starter void’ are unfounded, as the law ensures the warranty is only affected if the remote start system actually causes damage. Thanks to these legal protections, your vehicle’s warranty remains intact when a remote starter is installed professionally. Professional installation ensures compliance and keeps your vehicle’s warranty intact.

Myth #3: Remote Starts Aren’t Compatible with All Vehicles

Manual Transmission

Remote start compatibility is a common concern, especially for manual transmission vehicles. For a manual transmission, extra parts are required to ensure proper installation. Features like reservation mode are essential for safety to prevent accidental movement during remote start. Many systems on the market are compatible with both automatic and manual transmissions.

If you drive a diesel engine vehicle, you’ll be pleased to know that remote start systems are available and safe to use. These remote start systems include a glow plug feature, which ensures the glow plugs have time to warm up before the engine starts. This ensures a reliable start in all conditions. Many diesel-compatible remote start systems also come equipped with advanced security features, such as alarms and immobilizers, to help prevent vehicle theft. When selecting a remote start system for your diesel engine, it’s important to choose one with the right features to guarantee safe, efficient, and secure operation every time you start your vehicle remotely.

Myth #4: Remote Start is Only Useful in Winter

It’s true that remote starts shine in cold weather, allowing you to start your vehicle and warm it before you step outside. But they’re equally useful in summer, giving you a cool cabin by activating your air conditioning remotely. Remote start convenience features ensure comfort year-round, while extended range systems let you control your car remotely from inside your home or office.

Myth #5: Remote Start Systems Are a Security Risk

Some drivers worry that remote starters could increase vehicle theft risk. In reality, all remote start systems are designed with security in mind. Remote-started vehicles remain locked, require the key or fob to operate, and integrate with factory security systems. If someone attempts to put the vehicle into Drive, the remote starter will automatically shut off the engine to prevent theft. A running vehicle cannot be driven without authorization, making remote car starters safe for everyday use. Another concern relates to European vehicles with strong key encryption. In these cases, a functional key must be sacrificed for the installation.  That means that the battery is removed and the key is placed in a special box, which is buried in the dash with the remote starter.  This allows the vehicle to passively recognize a known key during the remote start process, but does not allow the vehicle to see the key at any other time, keeping door handle sensors off and doors locked.

Myth #6: Installation Is Too Complicated

While it might seem intimidating to install a remote starter yourself, professional installation ensures everything works seamlessly. A professional install follows all safety and security protocols to preserve your vehicle’s warranty and integrity.  For most vehicles on the road today, the key or fob will have an RFID chip as a security feature.  Using special software in conjunction with the remote start allows a professional installer to teach valuable key data to the new module, which allows the vehicle to start.  Integrating with a factory remote start is also no trouble, even in vehicles with advanced telematics and cellular communication.   At Flynn Audio, our remote start installation service guarantees a clean, reliable setup.

Myth #7: Factory Remote Start is Good Enough

Many new vehicles come with a remote start button on the remote.  While this will start the vehicle for a short time, from a short distance away, it pales in comparison to the features of an aftermarket remote start.  Range– A factory remote start activated from the fob usually has less than 100 feet of range.  Some aftermarket remotes may work as far as 2-3 miles away! A mobile app is becoming common with vehicles, but the monthly fees can feel like extortion.  Our mobile app control is only a few bucks a month. Confirmation– How do you know your vehicle is running? Most aftermarket remotes are 2-way, meaning the remote itself will chirp and blink to tell you the vehicle is warming up even when you can’t see it. Run time– A typical remote start run time from the factory is 10 minutes, hardly enough time to fully warm up the interior.  Aftermarket systems can be programmed to run for 30 minutes, or as long as 90 minutes for extreme use cases.  Lastly, most factory remote starts will only allow you to start the vehicle twice (10 minutes x 2 start = 20 minutes total) before locking the system out and requiring a short drive to reset it.  We love our pets, but not every store does.  If the typical grocery store stop is 25 minutes, don’t you want a system that works from the minute you leave the car until you come back

Factory remote starters often lack features found in today’s remote start systems, such as extended range and smartphone integration. With professional installation, you can enjoy added convenience, safety, and reliability.
